ALPHA Felting 2011

This year the younger students once again created puppets that related to a story that they wrote together, in small groups. There was a Princess story, a Pokemon story, Achmed the Dead Terrorist made an appearance, and there was a super hero story. The students worked through the felting process and then created their on backdrops for their show.

The older students had the opportunity to learn how to do Shibori dye work with prefelt and then to choose an object to create from that felt. They had to plan for shrinkage and design their work accordingly. My original idea was to have them make their own slippers, but decided to give them some choices. Each student created a very personal work that reflects their sense of design and usefullness.

The pictures here represent the work done by ALPHA Students grades K thru 12. The elementary students wrote their own plays and then created felt puppets and performed their plays. The JR/SR High group created work in reaction to what they have been learning in their language arts about the Holocaust. The work is very personal and expressive. The adults also made felt items the instructors of the elementary students made puppets, while the instructor of the older students made felted purses.

I had fun making puppets. It was fun, interesting and a fun experience. If someone else was looking for a craft to do I would suggest felting. It is awesome!

The artwork pictured here shows the complete works of the high school students from their ten day experience. They made felted pictures, pillows and some chose to make small animal sculptures. The work of the elementary students reflects their work with learning the felting process, and puppets.
